Interdependence of Economy and Society:
Wilhelm-Röpke-Institute

The mutual relationship between economy and society cannot be reduced to supply and demand. The „Interdependence of Orders“ (Walter Eucken) can only be understood if issues „Beyond Supply and Demand“ (the German title of the most well-known book of Wilhelm Röpke) are incorporated into the scientific analysis. This insight is fundamental for the concept of the Social Market Economy as conceived theoretically by Walter Eucken, Alfred Müller-Armack and Wilhelm Röpke and put into political practice by Ludwig Erhard.

Our institute is especially dedicated to the intellectual heritage of Wilhelm Röpke (1899-1966), who in 1924 was assigned a chair at the University of Jena as the youngest professor in Germany. The Wilhelm-Röpke-Institute conducts research and publication activities related to the ideas of Wilhelm Röpke and aims at revitalizing the intellectual heritage of the founding fathers of the Social Market Economy.
